# what are Pristine Punks?

Many consider Pristine Punks to be the unofficial face of the Bitmap Protocol. To understand what a pristine punk is, you must first understand what the Bitmap Protocol is. Bitmap in simple terms, is an on-chain Bitcoin Metaverse. Every time the Bitcoin blockchain processes a block of transactions, data is recorded. That data is then used to construct a visual representation of that Bitcoin block. There is a new block of transactions solved about every 8 minutes, ultimately creating a new bitmap about every 8 minutes. With that being said we now have over 800,000 Bitmaps. So far, Bitcoin has created 800 bitmaps that holds the image of what we call a pristine punk. Because of its unusual 2 transaction data, most of these were made in the first years of Bitcoin when there were very little transactions and the likely hood of another pristine punk being created slim to none.
